Criminal law deals with the government prosecution of an individual for acts classified as crimes as well as the rights of an accused person and the criminal process, including arrest, arraignment, grand juries, pleas, discovery, pretrial hearings, trials, jury selection, evidence, motions, and post-trial remedies.

Unlike a civil suit, which involves cases arising from breach of contract, car accidents, debt collection or boundary disputes, for example, where parties argue about money, services or the right of one party to do something to which the other party objects, in a criminal case, either the State or Federal government brings criminal charges, accusing an individual of a crime. Conviction of a criminal act results in punishment as prescribed by law. Punishment reflects the severity of the crime and maybe a jail sentence or a combination of both fines and imprisonment.
